Check out the width of that Debian display
A digital billboard in Greenock, Scotland, has been displaying a Debian login prompt for several weeks, drawing attention from the Linux community and passersby. The unusual sight, spotted by a reader of The Register, highlights the challenges faced by outdoor advertising infrastructure in the UK following the collapse of major advertising firm 75Media.
The billboard, located in the west-central Lowlands town of Greenock, has been running a Debian system, likely Debian 11 "Bullseye," based on available evidence. The display resolution of just 1,200 x 320 pixels suggests it was originally intended for basic digital signage rather than general computing. The login prompt remains visible, though no one appears to be managing the system, leaving the terminal exposed to public view.
75Media, which operated the billboard, ceased trading at the end of 2025, leaving the future of such displays uncertain. The company was a major player in the UK’s outdoor advertising sector, and its collapse has left many digital billboards in limbo. Without an active advertising agency or IT support, the Greenock screen may remain in its current state until responsibility is formally transferred.
Debian, a widely used Linux distribution, is known for its stability and community-driven development. The operating system’s long-term support for version 11 "Bullseye" is set to end in 2026, though extended support may be available until 2031 if funding is secured. Despite its age, the system continues running, albeit without human intervention.
The sight of a Debian login prompt on a large public display has sparked curiosity, particularly among Linux enthusiasts. Some have noted the irony of an advertisement-free operating system being used for advertising—until now. The exposed terminal also underscores the vulnerabilities of unmaintained digital infrastructure.
Local observers have described the scene as strangely poignant, with the screen appearing abandoned yet functional. Without someone to log in and either shut it down or update its content, the billboard remains in an odd state of suspended animation.
