Canada Pushes Back as Trump Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America'

Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiled a bilingual billboard on Canada’s Lake Ontario shoreline on Saturday, pushing back against President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming the lake “Lake America.” The sign, displayed near the U.S.–Canada border in Grimsby, Ontario, reads “Lake Ontario — Now and Always” in both English and French, directly challenging the U.S. government’s move to reclassify the shared freshwater body.

Trump signed the order last week, claiming the name change was in response to contentious trade negotiations with Canada. In a statement, he asserted, “People often ask me who’s the worst to deal with on trade? And I said, that’s easy. Canada.” He also tied the decision to broader trade frustrations, adding, “Canada has been ripping us off for years — no longer.”

Ford, speaking to reporters at the Fifty Point Conservation Area, dismissed the renaming effort, stating, “President Trump can call it whatever he wants, but I can tell you the rest of the world will always call it Lake Ontario.” He emphasized Canada’s commitment to defending its sovereignty, declaring, “We’re resilient and strong Canadians… we’ll never back down from a bully.”

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney echoed this stance on social media, posting on X that “Canadian women and men know that things must be called by their name, and this lake is called Lake Ontario — today and forever.”

The dispute escalates amid a broader breakdown in trade talks between the U.S. and Canada. Last week, Trump announced a 50% tariff on a wide range of Canadian imports, prompting Canada to vow matching tariffs “dollar for dollar.” The economic tension has strained relations between the two nations, which have long been close allies.

While the U.S. order only affects how American federal agencies refer to the lake, its impact has already extended beyond official channels. Google confirmed it updated Google Maps in the U.S. to reflect “Lake America,” while Canadian users still see “Lake Ontario.” Internationally, both names now appear. This mirrors a similar change Google made last year after Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, sparking pushback from Mexico and legal disputes.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also rejected the renaming, calling it a distraction from pressing domestic issues. In a YouTube video, she stated, “Renaming the lake is deflecting from the real needs of Americans.”

The Lake Ontario dispute highlights broader concerns about unilateral name changes and their geopolitical implications. With both countries digging in, the naming controversy may persist as a symbol of ongoing trade and diplomatic tensions.
