British heavyweight Moses Itauma handed harsh world-title lesson

British prospect Moses Itauma suffered his first professional defeat in a closely watched heavyweight world-title bout at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday night, as experienced Croatian champion Filip Hrgovic claimed the vacant IBF belt with a ninth-round stoppage.

Itauma, 21, entered the contest as the younger and less battle-tested contender, but his sharp left hand and early composure troubled Hrgovic. The Kent-based fighter dominated the opening rounds, outworking the 34-year-old with fluid combinations and footwork. However, as the fight progressed, Itauma’s stamina waned, his breathing grew labored, and his legs lost their spring. Hrgovic, a 2016 Olympic bronze medalist and former world title challenger, calmly absorbed pressure and waited for the moment to capitalize.

The turning point arrived in the eighth round, when Itauma—never having completed more than six rounds in a pro fight—attempted to overwhelm Hrgovic with a frenetic pace. The Croatian absorbed waves of punches, showing the durability he demonstrated in a 2022 draw with China’s Zhilei Zhang and a majority decision loss to Britain’s Daniel Dubois. By the ninth, Itauma’s gas tank was empty. His corner threw in the towel as the referee stopped the bout.

After the fight, Itauma was taken to hospital on a stretcher for precautionary checks. Promoter Frank Warren confirmed the boxer had suffered exhaustion and an apparent leg injury. “He’s done something to his leg as well and he was quite tired,” Warren said.

Hrgovic improved to 21-1 with his 16th career stoppage, becoming Croatia’s first-ever heavyweight world champion. He acknowledged Itauma’s talent but emphasized the importance of conditioning in elite boxing. “He was fighting like an amateur,” Hrgovic said. “I needed to endure it. He got tired and I got him in the later rounds.”

Itauma had never sparred a full 12 rounds before this fight, a gap that likely contributed to his late fade. Warren defended the fighter’s team, noting that top heavyweights like Dubois recovered from early setbacks. Still, the result raised questions about Itauma’s preparation and ability to pace himself in championship bouts.

Analysts noted Itauma’s resilience—he took body shots without showing chin weakness—and his hand speed, which troubled Hrgovic. But the fight exposed a clear disparity between raw talent and championship-level experience. Itauma’s cerebral approach, including his habit of reading psychology books, may have worked against lesser opponents, but against a hardened veteran, overcommitment cost him.

Warren urged patience, urging Itauma to rebuild with manageable fights and avoid fighting like an amateur in title bouts. The lesson was clear: talent alone isn’t enough at the highest level. Itauma’s next steps could define whether he follows the path of redemption or risks fading like past British heavyweight prospects.
