Bangladesh PM Condemns Enforced Disappearance as Grave Crime Against Humanity

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has declared that the Bangladesh government has initiated full investigations and legal proceedings into every case of enforced disappearance in the country, describing the act as one of the world's most heinous crimes and the gravest violation of human rights. In a message published Saturday on his verified Facebook page to mark the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances on August 30, the prime minister expressed deep sympathy and solidarity with disappeared persons and their families both in Bangladesh and worldwide.

Tarique Rahman emphasized that enforced disappearances frequently occur under authoritarian regimes and in political conflict zones, where state security forces and law enforcement agencies use brutal measures to suppress anti-government movements and dissenting voices. He noted that the practice represents more than statistical loss, characterizing it as the destruction of a family's dreams, aspirations, and future, leaving relatives in constant uncertainty without the ability to grieve normally.

Addressing past human rights violations in Bangladesh, the prime minister stated that the former regime established secret detention facilities to detain victims of forced abduction for months or years. These locations became widely known to the public as Aynaghar. Citing reports from local and international human rights organizations, he said state agencies under the previous government made at least several hundred people disappear at various times to suppress the political and democratic rights of citizens.

Following the fall of the former government after the 2024 mass student and public uprising, some victims of forced abduction managed to return. However, many individuals, including political leaders such as Ilias Ali and Chowdhury Alam, remain unaccounted for to this day.

To prevent future occurrences, the government is introducing a distinct legal framework. The Prevention and Redress of Enforced Disappearance Bill, 2026, alongside the National Human Rights Commission Bill, 2026, have been formally tabled in parliament. The prime minister stated that the passage of these bills into law will help ensure no individual or entity can commit enforced disappearances or abductions with impunity.

Referencing international legal standards, Tarique Rahman pointed to Article 7(2) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, which categorizes enforced disappearance as a crime against humanity warranting strict punishment. Aligning with this year's global theme, "Victims First, Actions Now," he called for international unity to enforce accountability and secure justice for victims and their families.
