Ankit Balyan murder case: Two suspects killed in encounter with Shamli Police

Two suspects in the murder of Haryana-based singer and social media personality Ankit Balyan were killed in a police encounter in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, officials confirmed Monday. The suspects, identified as Sumit, 24, and Mohit, 22, were part of a four-member gang that allegedly shot Balyan on August 26, 2026, according to the Superintendent of Police (SP) office in Shamli.

The encounter occurred Sunday evening during a joint operation involving the Kotwali Shamli Police Station, Jhinjhana Police Station, and the SWAT Team Shamli. Police stated the suspects engaged in retaliatory gunfire, resulting in their injuries. Both were transported to the District Joint Hospital in Shamli but were pronounced dead during treatment.

Head Constables Harvinder and Pradeep of the SWAT Team were also injured in the exchange of fire. Authorities recovered two pistols, ammunition, a motorcycle, a bag, a mobile phone, and cash totaling ₹5,000 from the scene.

Officials noted that 15 cases are registered against Mohit and Sumit in Haryana, including the murder of Ankit Balyan. Investigators continue to gather details about their criminal backgrounds. Earlier, Uttar Pradesh’s Special Task Force had traced the suspects’ escape route using CCTV footage from Shamli, Loni in Ghaziabad, Delhi, and Sonipat.

Balyan, known for his song *Baby Badmash*, was shot near a gym in Shamli’s Kotwali area around 6:45 p.m. on August 26. Police said the attack bore a resemblance to lyrics in his song, including the line “Murder maar de sadak ke upar (murder on the road).” The singer was rushed to a nearby health centre but was declared dead from his injuries.

Legal proceedings related to the encounter are underway at Kotwali Shamli Police Station. Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about the remaining two suspects.
