8-Year-Old Mumbai Boy Dies After Woman Runs Over Him While on Phone

An eight-year-old boy was fatally struck by a speeding sport utility vehicle in Mumbai’s Bandra neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, police said. The driver, a 45-year-old woman, was allegedly distracted by a mobile phone call and has been arrested following the incident.

The boy, identified as Arnav Gupta, was crossing John Baptist Road opposite Jijamata Garden around 1:30 p.m. when the SUV hit him, according to police. He was rushed to Holy Family Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, the Press Trust of India reported. The vehicle involved was a Toyota Innova Crysta registered to Megha Rawal, a local resident of Bandra.

Police registered a case against Rawal under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act. Charges include culpable homicide not amounting to murder (Section 105 BNS), rash driving (Section 281 BNS), act endangering life (Section 125 BNS), and dangerous driving (Section 184 Motor Vehicles Act). Further investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances.

This accident is one of two fatal road incidents reported in Mumbai within 24 hours. Separately, a 25-year-old woman died in Chembur Friday evening after the two-wheeler she was riding pillion on was struck by a speeding cement mixer. Dhanashree Dongare and her brother Manas Dongare, 20, were returning from Govandi where they had purchased Raksha Bandhan gifts. The collision occurred near Subhash Nagar, close to Muktanand High School. Manas survived with injuries and was taken to Zen Hospital.

Police said the cement mixer driver was attempting to overtake when the collision occurred, throwing both siblings off the vehicle. Dhanashree suffered fatal head injuries and died at the hospital.

Road safety advocates have repeatedly raised concerns over distracted driving and speeding in Mumbai, particularly in densely populated areas like Bandra and Chembur. The incidents highlight ongoing risks faced by pedestrians and motorcyclists in high-traffic zones.

Authorities continue to emphasize stricter enforcement of traffic laws and public awareness campaigns to reduce such tragic accidents.
